Dr. V. Vasanthi Devi
Former Vice Chancellor, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University
Vasanthi Devi, former vice-chancellor of Manonamaniam Sundaranar University in Tirunelveli, is remembered for the wide-ranging reforms she ushered in during her tenure of six years.
She also served as chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women for three years and as a member of the State Planning Board for a brief period.
She completed her Masters in History from the Presidency College, Madras and got her Ph.D., from the University of the Philippines, Manila. As a teacher, she was a leader in the Government College Teachers’ Association and also intensely participated in the Federation of School, College and University teachers in Tamil Nadu in the mid-eighties.
She has been an active participant in civil society movements and campaigns for gender justice, human rights, for ensuring right to education and environment protection. Vasanthi Devi is the granddaughter of Chakkarai, one of the founders of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), and a leader of the first industrial strike in India, the Buckingham and Carnatic Mills strike in Madras in the early 1920.
