Research is an essential ingredient of journalism. QIAMS understands that and trains students in research practices such as: collecting, managing and interpreting big data, using qualitative research methods for human interest stories, and digitizing old archival material.
Some of the projects we are currently working on include: oral histories that have been lost or are on the verge of disappearing, cultural practices of different communities, and migration patterns.
Development journalism is a field that is important in effecting positive social change, especially in a developing country like India. In-depth research and reporting that is carried out with care, empathy, and a commitment to social justice can often go a long way in influencing public perceptions on various issues. Journalists can often be important advocates of social change and moral progress, giving a voice to people who do not have the privilege of having their stories heard.
