The great Indian painters have left behind a significant volume of paintings inspite of their fragile nature. This great canvas stretching over vast geographies, spawning a rich variety of techniques, styles and changing content over centuries (10,000 BCE to 1950 CE) provides for a very interesting study. This course will provide an appreciation of the glorious tradition from prehistory to early modern painting and will include the iconic Ajanta, Chola,Vijayanagara, Mughal and Rajput paintings to Raja Ravi Varma, Amrita Sher- Gil and Jamini Roy.
Dr.AlameluNachiappan (Head of Dept. and Associate Professor, Retd.) has taught in the Fine Arts Department, Stella Maris College, Chennai for 34 years. Her areas of expertise include Indian Art History, Modern Art, Art Criticism, Drawing and Design. Her M.Phil dissertation was a monograph on D.P.Roy Chowdhury, the famous modern Indian sculptor. Her doctoral thesis was on Narration in Nayaka Art based on Select Temples in Tamil Nadu. She has presented papers on Textile traditions, Indian Art, Modern Indian Art and Cartoons at national and international seminars.
